A Study On The Style,Language And Culture Of Feng Jicai’s Marketplace Novels

Feng Jicai was born and grew up in Tianjin,the regional culture of Tianjin has profoundly influenced Feng Jicai’s literature creation.Tianjin is a city where land and water are mixed,and where historically the Chinese and foreigners had been living together for a time.It has an extremely unique regional culture.As one of "the most entangled person with the earth",Feng Jicai loves his hometown Tianjin.His marketplace novels such as Strange World and Legend Talk trilogy and Wordly Wonderful Man all took Tianjin as the story location,and their time all set in the late Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.The contents of the stories are also closely related to Tianjin’s market customs,folk anecdotes and strange people’s stories.Feng Jicai used Tianjin dialect as the tone of the text language.It makes the novel full of the taste of civic life and the strong local atmosphere of Tianjin.From the perspective of regional culture,this paper analyzes and discusses his novels about Tianjin in three aspects: creative "return" to traditional styles,the language features full of Tianjin flavor and the dual expression of regional culture.In terms of stylistic form,Feng Jicai drew lessons from and innovates traditional literary forms,such as legendary novels,storytelling novels and note novels,under the influence of Tianjin regional culture;in terms of language,Feng Jicai not only used the authentic Tianjin dialect and crosstalk form to increase the atmosphere of the old Tianjin,but also used a variety of flexibly rhetorical techniques to express the regional character,to make the contents of the text easy to understand,and to enhance the infectivity of sentences in the meanwhile;in terms of cultural implication,compared with other regional literature writers and "Tianjin flavour" writers,Feng Jicai has obvious uniqueness,he expressed his understanding of the folklore implication through the marketplace novels,and by the construction of Tianjin as an imaginary literary space,he manifested his attitude towards national traditional culture.
