With the increasing importance of the Internet of Things in this information age,people are gradually interested in this industry.The source text of this translation report is selected from the third chapter “Communication” in the book Internet of Things:Concepts and System Design published by Springer in 2020.This chapter describes some common communication technologies in the Internet of Things,including layered network design,link layer,network layer,transport layer,edge network,network topology,restricted application network and other components and related principles and functions.The source text is of great value for readers who intend to understand the relevant contents of the Internet of Things.The translation practice is guided by Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.Of the four equivalences mentioned in this theory,lexical equivalence,sentence equivalence and passage equivalence are selected to guide the practice in that they are able to help cope with the difficulties in the translation of professional terms,long and difficult sentences and the realization of strong logic at the linguistic level.Six translation techniques are used in total including reverse translation,forward translation,zero translation,amplification,division and repetition.Reverse translation is an important technique which emphasizes key information by adjusting the position of English and Chinese components to make the translation conform to the habits of readers;forward translation helps realize the accurate transmission of content information by being faithful to the logical order of the source text;zero translation plays a key role in maintaining the terms and abbreviations in unity and professionalism;division is adopted to translate long and difficult sentences in English for science and technology(shortened as EST)texts;repetition is helpful in making the source text information clearer.It is found that Functional Equivalence Theory is effective in guiding the translation practice.
