Since the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging across the globe, online education is booming. The microlecture has become one of the most prevalent forms of online courses because it is not temporally or spatially constrained.During the process of learning through microlectures, accurate subtitle translation is crucial to audiences’ understanding of a defined topic. An Introduction to the Industrial Internet is a microlecture offered by Changzhou College of Information Technology, and many science and technology terminologies, knowledge about the industrial Internet, and expressions with Chinese characteristics are included in its source text.According to the client’s requirements,at the first and second stages, the translator adopts the mode of machine translation plus post-editing to produce a translated script;at the third stage, the translator segments the translated scripts based on the features of subtitle production. This process requires both bilingual conversion competence and extra-linguistic competence of the translator.Based on extra-linguistic sub-competence in the PACTE translation competence model, the report aims to demonstrate the role of encyclopedic knowledge, bicultural knowledge, and subject knowledge in subtitle translation. The findings suggest that extra-linguistic competence facilitates subtitle translation, including revising mistakes in machine translation, improving the accuracy of bilingual subtitles, and enhancing the efficiency of subtitle segmentation. To be more specific, encyclopedic knowledge helps the translator precisely translate science and technology terminologies, professional knowledge, and company and organization names;bicultural knowledge aids the translator in translating cultural elements in political discourse,Chinese idioms and poems, and buzzwords;and subject knowledge enables the translator to understand the tone and style of the target text, translation methods, features of subtitle translation, and requirements for making subtitles. |
