| Translation competence has always been a hot topic in translation studies.The PACTE Group put forward their translation competence model in the 1990s,and a series of research based on the model have been conducted.This thesis is a report based on a subtitle translation task entrusted by SteelSeries.The purpose is to illustrate the facilitating role of extra-linguistic competence in the PACTE model in translation,especially when adjusting and editing the machine-generated translation.In this report,the author will replay the process of the translation practice,including access to background information,preparation before translation,and work during and after translation.The author will analyze typical examples to demonstrate how extra-linguistic competence helped him to improve the quality of the machine translation.Different types of extra-linguistic knowledge,including encyclopedic,bicultural and thematic knowledge will be mentioned.Through the analysis of this translation practice,the author finds that the extra-linguistic competence in the PACTE translation competence model is of great help to translation practices,in this case,it enables the translator to make adjustments and revisions on the translation generated by the machine and finally come up with a valid translation for the client.The author also concludes that for translation tasks demanding more extra-linguistic competence,translators will still outperform the machine in turns of the quality of their translation.When translating,encyclopedic and bicultural knowledge help translators find correct terms,use expressions that the audience prefers,identify differences in popular culture and make acceptable transfer;whereas thematic knowledge help translators determine the style of the TT and strategies to use. |
