A Comparative Study Of Strategic Competence In Human Translation And Machine Translation Post-editing From The Metacognitive Perspective

An increasing number of translators including professionals and novices begin to output the translation in the mode of machine translation post-editing(MTPE)as translation technologies advance in recent years.MTPE refers to the process of selecting MT engine before modifying the raw machine translated output,or deleting it and retranslate the source text with the reference of the source text.Based on the metacognitive theory,the thesis intends to investigate into the composition of HT strategic competence and MTPE strategic competence and the relationship between them.The thesis tries to answer the following three questions:(1)What are the components that constitute the HT strategic competence?(2)What are the components that constitute the MTPE strategic competence?(3)What is the relationship between HT strategic competence and MTPE strategic competence? Combining the research methods of literature analysis,questionnaire survey,and interviews,and the data analysis methods of factor analysis,correlation analysis,and regression analysis,the researcher comes to the following conclusions:(1)The HT strategic competence is composed of 12 metacognitive strategies falling into four dimensions;(2)The MTPE strategic(3)The MTPE strategic competence is composed of 16 metacognitive strategies falling into four dimensions;(3)The HT and MTPE strategic competences and their four factors are highly correlated;the evaluation factor of HT strategic competence do not predict the MTPE strategic competence;for student translators and less-experienced translators,their HT strategic competence impacts on their MTPE strategic competence in a greater degree than the case for professional translators and experienced translators.The thesis probes into the HT strategic competence and MTPE strategic competence and their relationship,which helps further the understanding of strategic competence,the core component of translation competence,and therefore provides reference for the translator training and translation practice.
