A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Behaviour Guru (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Explicitation

The source text for the translation practice is the first chapter of The Behaviour Guru.The book is an educational text aimed at teachers of younger children,addressing various issues that may arise in the classroom.Not only are a variety of idioms,slang and other culture-loaded words or expressions used in the work.Long and difficult sentences also abound.The book tends to describe abstract concepts with concrete images and many allusions.These features make the translation of the book quite difficult.How should the author translate these idioms,slang,and other cultureloaded expressions,as well as long and complicated sentences,so that the book is clear and understandable to the target readers? From this point of view,the author discusses the translation methods used for the text to achieve explicitness.Based on the linguistic features of the original text,the author examines the explicitation of the translated text from logical,semantic,and cultural perspectives.And to make possible the logical,semantic and culture-based explicitation of the translated text,the author presents translation approaches such as addition,division,modulation,paraphrase,equivalence and intra-textual annotation.As a result,the translation turns more readable and falls more in step with Chinese linguistic habits and style.The translation approaches also enable Chinese readers to better understand the message that Tom Bennett,the author of the original text,wants to convey.As the report presents the translation methods for explicating educational texts based on the study of explicitation in the E-C translation of The Behaviour Guru,it is hoped that it can offer some references for future efforts to translate educational texts,and analysis cases for teaching activities about the translation practice.In the meantime,the author realizes that the translation of informative texts such as educational ones should focus on delivering messages in the way that they are simple enough to understand.To this end,expliciation is a useful translation strategy.
