The source text of this translation practice comes from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy of Addictive Disorders, published by Guilford Press in 2022,by Bruce S.Liese, president of the American Psychological Association Division on Addiction Psychology, and Aaron T.Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy.Grounded in three decades of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy(CBT)research and clinical practice,as well as cutting-edge cognitive science, the book provides critical tools for understanding and treating the full range of addictive behaviors. The excerpts cover the first three chapters of the book, which introduce CBT models, the syndrome model of addiction, and practical applications of case conceptualizations. The book involves a large number of psychological terms, medical terms, abstract terms, and culture-loaded terms. In addition,it also contains many lengthy and complicated sentences, vague references, and implicit logic relations. All of them pose huge challenges to reading and translating. To address the above difficulties, optional explicitation strategy is adopted as guidelines in translation.Optional explicitation, first introduced by Kinga Klaudy,is dictated by differences in text-building strategies and stylistic preferences between languages. Its application in the target language can make the text as a whole correct and natural.Ten translation techniques are used at lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels to make the target text more explicit. At the lexical level, the meaning of words is clarified through concretization, verbalization, and addition of category words;at the syntactic level, the readability is enhanced with the employment of cutting,splitting-off,sentence reorganization, and conversion of punctuation marks;at the discourse level, the intrinsic logic is highlighted by addition of connectives, categorical shifts of cohesive devices and lexical repetition. This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction, which mainly introduces the research background, translation difficulties, and the significance of the research.Chapter Two is the practical process of the translation, including pre-translation,while-translation,and post-translation.Chapter Three is the theoretical basis, which introduces the definition and classification of explicitation and research on explicitation strategy.Chapter Four introduces the specific application of optional explicitation strategy in psychological texts at the lexical level, syntactic level, and discourse level respectively.Chapter Five is the conclusion, summarizing the major findings and limitations of this translation practice.
