The General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition),published by the Ministry of Education,clearly states that students’ exploration of thematic meaning should be the most important part of their language learning,which directly affects the degree of text comprehension,the level of thinking development and the effectiveness of language learning.At the same time,it is pointed out that the exploration of thematic meaning should be regarded as the core task of teaching and learning in the English curriculum,which will integrate the learning content to guide the integrated development of students’ language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity and learning ability.Based on the Constructivism theory and Activity-based English Learning,this study attempts to explore the following three questions:(1)How do senior high school English teachers understand the conception of thematic meaning exploration?(2)What are the main teaching strategies used by senior high school English teachers in the reading class based on thematic meaning exploration?(3)What is the effect of implementing strategies used in English reading teaching based on thematic meaning exploration in senior high school?Three English teachers and 158 students in Grade Two from H senior high school in Nanning,Guangxi were selected as the research participants.Interviews,classroom observation and questionnaires were used to collect data.The results indicate that:(1)The three English teachers understand the conception of thematic meaning exploration clearly and they implement it actively in daily reading teaching;(2)The three English teachers mainly use pictures,brainstorming,question chains,group discussion,and so forth to guide students to explore the meaning of the theme;(3)Through classroom observation,questionnaires and interviews,it can be seen that the effect of implementing strategies used in the three English teachers’ reading lessons based on thematic meaning exploration has achieved good results.On the basis of the results,the study suggests: Teachers should carefully study the Curriculum Standards and relevant literatures for deeply understanding the concept of the thematic meaning exploration;When implementing reading instruction,teachers should flexibly arrange the order of activities;Teachers should combine the exploration of thematic meaning with the reality of life for constructing an authentic and effective context;Teachers should give appropriate assistance according to the different ability levels of students.In addition,students should pay attention to the transfer and application of knowledge and improve their thinking quality in the process of learning. |
