A Practice Report On Translation Of Nep Cu-lang Xom Viet Nam (Excerpt) Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Translation Theory

The Old Customs-Vietnamese Countryside by Vietnamese scholar Toan Anh is a classic Vietnamese academic work with high academic value,which is an important reference for studying the yearly festivals and customs in Vietnamese villages.The translation of the work helps to deepen the academic exchange between China and Vietnam.Therefore,we choose the third chapter and third section of this work Rural Spring Festival to translate it,analyze the translation practice process and summarize the translation method of the text with Newmark’s text classification model and semantic translation and communicative translation strategies as the guide.Firstly,the translated text type is classified by Newmark’s text classification model,and then the translation strategy is selected according to the text type.The translated text type is a cultural text that is mainly an expression-based text with the characteristics of an informationbased text,so the translation strategy of semantic translation as the main translation strategy and communicative translation as the supplementary translation strategy is selected.The body of the report is divided into five chapters: Chapter 1 describes the translation task,including the background of the task,the introduction of the translated text,and the purpose of the translation task;Chapter 2 describes the translation process,divided into pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation,and describes the work to be completed in the three stages of translation;Chapter 3 is the theoretical framework,which firstly introduces the background and theoretical characteristics of Newmark’s translation theory;Chapter 4 is a translation case study,which extracts the translation difficulties at the word,sentence and chapter levels,analyzes them in the context of translation strategies,classifies and summarizes them according to translation techniques;finally concludes with a translation practice summary,which affirms the practical significance of combining translation practice with theoretical guidance,reviews the gains,reflects on the limitations,and looks forward to the future.The report on Vietnamese-Chinese translation practice explores the applicability of Western translation theory to guide the translation of Eastern cultural texts.Newmark’s translation theory plays a key role in the pre-translation,in-translation and post-translation stages: under the guidance of text classification mode and semantic translation and communicative translation strategies,the lexical level is dominated by semantic translation strategies-there are different textual status or no corresponding words in the cultural system of the translated readers,and the annotation method and word augmentation method are the main translation techniques;Idiomatic expressions,colloquialisms,and spoken languages in rural areas are treated using the reciprocal method to express the characteristics of the original text.At the sentence level,the translation strategy of communicative translation is mainly adopted,supplemented by semantic translation:according to the characteristics of using long modifying components in the translated language,truncated translation is carried out by the split translation method;For redundant information in the sentence,it is deleted by subtraction;In order to adjust the logic of the sentence,several short sentences are combined using the syndication method.At the chapter level,the structure of the word order position is adjusted,and the logical content of the text is coherent,and the original text information is better conveyed through the means of word repetition.For the translation of poetry,the semantic translation strategy is still adopted,and the meaning reproduction and formal imitation are the main means to reproduce the poetic image in the context of the translated language under the condition of faithfulness to the original work.The above translation techniques are summarized from this translation practice and effectively solve the difficulties encountered in translating the text.Of course,I am afraid that the problems encountered in cultural translation and the translation techniques used cannot be fully reflected in these few examples,but the report is a new step forward on the way of combining translation theory with Vietnamese-Chinese translation practice,and I hope it will provide a reference for future Vietnamese-Chinese cultural translation practice.
