In recent years, with the continuous development of 5G technology and Internet technology, the "meta-universe" has formed a trend.Among them, virtual reality technology as one of the important technologies to realize the"meta-universe" has been fully developed, applied in games, shopping and other fields. As people’s lives shift from offline to online during the COVID-19 pandemic, major museums have adapted to the trend by building a number of online VR digital museums,so that users can have an experience similar to offline viewing without leaving their homes. However, due to the short application time of virtual reality technology in museums,a large number of interface designs follow the traditional two-dimensional interface, which is not fully applicable to three-dimensional space. The existing VR museum interactive interface has problems such as large amount of information, single interaction mode and inconsistent with users’ cognitive habits. These problems lead to the imbalance of users’ cognitive load, reduce the efficiency of knowledge transmission and affect users’ experience. Therefore, this study aims to explore the interface design method of VR digital museum from the perspective of cognitive load by using the theory of balanced cognitive load and puts forward three design principles. The whole study includes three parts:theoretical research, design refinement and design practice. In the theoretical research part, this paper firstly studies cognitive load theory through literature review, and expands the two-dimensional model of cognitive load theory combined with cognitive process, laying a foundation for the application of balanced cognitive load theory in the following paper.Secondly, the paper analyzes the feasibility and necessity of applying cognitive load theory to VR digital museum interface design, which can effectively solve the problem of overload and insufficiency of cognitive load in VR digital museum interactive interface from the perspective of balanced cognitive load,so as to improve user experience. In the design refining part, this paper firstly combs the structure of VR digital museum interface design.Through the case analysis of the existing VR digital museum interface design structure features, analysis of the existing cognitive load problems. Then, starting from the evaluation model, the factors affecting the VR digital museum interface and cognitive load design were extracted through the user experience evaluation. The extracted factors were corresponding to the types of cognitive load, and the cognitive load factors were classified into three dimensions, namely cognition, task and experience, according to the causal model. From these three dimensions, the design principles are summarized, and the balance of cognitive load is achieved through hierarchical information design, natural interaction principle, enhanced guidance, reduced fatigue, and creating theme and emotional experience. In the design practice part, the extracted design principles are applied to the design practice of Dehua White porcelain VR digital Museum. Then, the comparison experiment of design principle optimization and usability experiment of design practice verify that the design principle can balance the cognitive load of VR digital museum interface design, solve the problem of overload and insufficiency of VR digital museum interface cognitive load, and provide better user experience for users. Finally,by reviewing the whole study and sorting out the work, the shortcomings of the study are pointed out,and the direction of future research is prospected.
