| While participating in a research project of “Foreign Policy to Developing Countries”entrusted by Shandong Provincial Foreign Affairs Research and Development Think Tank as a research assistant in 2020,the translator have been responsible for the translation of English materials served as background information.The articles Small States at the United Nations and The Diplomacy of Micro-states are documents has distinctive linguistic characteristics of diplomatic research texts.Translation of the source texts has not only provided valuable information for the research,but also provided rich examples of the combination of translation theory and practice in the English to Chinese translation process.Diplomatic research texts have multiple professional vocabulary,and the writing is rigorous and the logic is close.Based on the linguistic characteristics,difficulties in Chinese translation and the guiding advantages of Skopos Theory in these two articles,this paper mainly applied the three rules of Skopos Theory: Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule and Fidelity Rule to the translation of the texts on the basis of previous research and the translation process.On the one hand,this report expounded how these three principles has guided the translation of the texts;on the other hand,it explained in which way the translation has embodied the three principles of Skopos Theory.The process of the translation is a process of getting further and deeper understanding of the three principles of Skopos Theory,and also a process of quality improvement step by step.Through translation practice,the translator has come to the following conclusion: the characteristics of policy research texts determined that the first problem for translators to solve is to enable readers of the target language to obtain similar reading effects as the readers of original language.In the process of translating,accurate translation is required at the lexical level,especially for words or terms related to policy areas;at the syntactic level,the language needs to be fluent and conform to the logic of Chinese writing;at the discourse level,it should be connected naturally and coherent semantically,and at the same time,it is necessary to retain the writing style of policy research texts.This report is a comprehensive summary and in-depth reflection on this translation task,divided into six chapters.Chapter 1 has described the background,characteristics and structure of the mission.Chapter 2 has introduced the translation process in three parts:pre-translation preparation,translation process and post-tranlsation editing.Chapter 3 has introduced the emergence and connotation of Skopos Theory.Chapter 4 has introduced language difficulties from the levels of lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.Chapter5,as the main body of the report,has analyzed the three principles of Skopos Theory from the three levels that mentioned above.As a summary of the report,Chapter 6 is the reflection of the translation task with summary of the shortcomings and methods to improve it.In the process of translation practice and reports writing,the translator has gained valuable experience and gained a deeper understanding of translating diplomatic research texts.When translating diplomatic research texts under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator needs to achieve the goal of coherence and semantic accuracy in the translation,taking full account of the preferences of the target readers and Cultural identity,in combination with the characteristics of the text. |
