| With the acceleration of Chinese culture’s “Going Out”,the expectation of spreading Chinese traditional culture and expectation for world’s better understanding of China has been more urgent. As a part of the “Going Out” of Chinese culture, the translation of children’s picture books can promote the communication between Chinese and other cultures. The picture book,Muke the Ranger: A Scary Prediction by Chinese writer Xiong Liang, with ancient culture as the background, shows a magic Land of Peach Blossoms. The author has chosen the second of twelve books as translation text, aiming to arouse Western readers’ interests in Chinese history and culture, which could lay the foundation for further attention and understanding of China and provide a bridge to cultural exchange between China and West in the future.Based on the textual characteristics and translation purpose, the author chooses Gideon Toury’s Translation Norms Theory as the guiding theory, exploring the role of norms in the process of translation from preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms and seeking for the proper translation strategies and methods under the guidance of the norms. In the translation practice, the author focuses on initial norms and operational norms. At the levels of lexicalization, syntax and discourse, the author combines foreignization in culture and domestication in language. In addition, transliteration, free translation, literal translation and annotation, transliteration and annotation and interpretation are used. This translation practice demonstrates that understanding the original text is the prerequisite for translating.Under the guidance of the initial norms,we should grasp the translation tendency: foreignization in culture, which is conducive to cultural communication, and domestication in language to enhance the readability of the translation.Under the guidance of operational norms, specific translation methods are adopted to improve the quality of translation. The author hopes that this practice can provide practical reference for the translation of children’s picture books in the future,so as to better promote “Going Out” of Chinese culture. |
