A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of CODING FOR BEGINNERS: PYTHON (Excerpts)

With the implementation of the strategy for invigorating China through science and education,the workforce development strategy,and the innovation-driven development strategy,computer programming education is flourishing.Most programming languages originate from Western countries,and programming books are not common in China,especially for teenagers.The source language text for this translation practice is the first four chapters of the book CODING FOR BEGINNERS:PYTHON by Elliot Davis,a Canadian professional software engineer,which is a guide to learning Python programming for beginners,especially teenagers.After fully understanding the source language,the translator applies the theory of Eco-Translatology to guide this translation practice and explain how to achieve the“Three Dimensional” transformation in translation.This means realizing the adaptive selection of the linguistic dimension,cultural dimension,and communicative dimension that Eco-Translatology emphasizes to transform the translation.In realizing the linguistic dimension of adaptive selection transformation,special attention should be paid to punctuation transformation,sentence adjustments,and chapter coherence.In realizing the cultural dimension of adaptive selection transformation,the translator uses the method of translating four-character sets and proverb sets to distill the essence of the text and achieve the effect of conforming to the cultural ecosystem of the translated language.In realizing the communicative dimension of adaptive selection transformation,there was zero translation annotation of terminology by the translator,which resulted in not achieving the communicative intent of the translation.The addition of programming-type background information,which was not mentioned in the source language text,has the effect of improving the reader’s understanding of the communicative message.Using creative biomimicry methods to transform dull text into concrete images to increase readers’ interest in reading.Finally,the translator summarizes and looks forward to the experience gained in translation practice,the problem countermeasures and the direction of future efforts.Through this translation practice,the translator has gained a deeper understanding and grasp of the guiding role of Eco-Translatology in the Chinese translation of computer programming technology texts.The translator has also summarized the issues that should be paid attention to and the translation methods used in achieving the “Three Dimensional” Transformation.The translator hopes to provide some reference and guidance for the translation of other programming sci-tech texts in the future.
