Since the 1990s,the Sixth Generation has become an important part of Chinese cinema and has built up a reputation in the world cinema. In 1991,Zhang Yuan won the Grand Jury Prize at the Tri-Continental Film Festival in Nantes France for his independent film "Mama",and the sixth generation of directors officially entered the stage of history.Against the backdrop of repeated domestic bans, they have either struggled to raise funds independently or relied on overseas film festival funds to achieve success in the international film market.Unlike the previous generation of films, the Sixth Generation films have been closer to the Western film market since their birth and have won the favor of many foreign film critics. The international dissemination of sixth-generation films has proven to make the world understand China better. In the context of cultural globalization and the strengthening of national soft power, the Sixth Generation films have developed the market capacity of Chinese films, enhanced the competitiveness of Chinese films and played an important role in cross-cultural communication by virtue of their unique social perspective, rich subject matter and creative concepts close to the West. However,it cannot be ignored that the international dissemination of Sixth Generation films also faces many obstacles, from the controversy of Orientalist dilemma to the elitist orientation away from the public,as well as the instability of production level and market distribution, which limit the dissemination effect of Sixth Generation films. This paper tries to analyze the production mechanism, advantages and difficulties of cross-cultural communication of the Sixth Generation films in the context of globalization from the perspective of cross-cultural communication, and proposes a cross-cultural communication strategy for Chinese films based on the Sixth Generation films. The paper is divided into five parts. The first part defines the concept of sixth-generation directors and cross-cultural communication, and the second part analyzes the cross-cultural communication of Chinese cinema in the context of globalization, and compares the overview of cross-cultural communication of Chinese cinema from a longitudinal historical perspective. It focuses on the new opportunities and transformations of subjects, channels and audiences brought about by the globalization era.The third part interprets the intercultural communication characteristics of the Sixth Generation films, divided into four aspects:foundation construction, communication channels, empathy mechanism, and scene dispatching;the fourth part analyzes the communication effects of the Sixth Generation films through the texts of overseas film review websites, and analyzes the interactive feedback and value recognition of overseas audiences; The last part analyzes the current development dilemmas faced by the sixth generation films in cross-cultural communication, and puts forward the prospect of cross-cultural communication based on the sixth generation films, with the hope that Chinese films can be smoother in the process of cross-cultural communication and have more opportunities to shine in the international film world.
