A Report On Chinese-English Translation Of Studies On Sanjiangyuan From Geographical And Historical Perspective(Excerpts)

At present,the translation of human geography research results closely related to Chinese culture and physical geography has strong academic value and cultural significance,and gradually becomes one of the research hotspots.As the source area of three great rivers,Sanjiangyuan has a complex natural geography and a strong human history.Studies on Sanjiangyuan from Geographical and Historical Perspective presents the historical pursuit of the Sanjiangyuan region and the scientific exploration of the natural geography in literary flavor,showing rich information of human geography.Therefore,the translator selected some of the chapters as the source text for translation practice.Guided by Newmark’s communicative translation,this practice report implements text analysis and translation methods explorations at three levels: lexical,syntactic and textural.At the lexical level,the method of the specialized name plus the generalized name is adopted for some specialized terms and geographical names,while the naturalization strategy is more often adopted for the four-character structure to convey the inner meaning of the source text in the target language,so that the target readers could obtain the same effect as the source readers;at the syntactic level,the translation of multiple predicates,passive sentences and negative sentences are analyzed,and the alienation and naturalization strategies are flexibly used to make the translation conform to the reading habits of the target readers;at the textual level,the lexical cohesion and semantic cohesion are stressed,so as to realize the effect of communicative translation by adopting the appropriate cohesion means aiming at smooth and readable translated version.This translation task may promote potential readers’ in-depth understanding of the natural geography,history,and humanities of Sanjiangyuan,and help the translators have a deeper understanding of the concrete application of Newmark’s communicative translation in practice.It is expected to provide some experience and reference for the translation practice of texts of human geography.
