| The author has translated the first two chapters ofA Philosophy for the Science of WellBeing by Prof.Anna Alexandrova, from which she finds that difficulties lie in the genre and language of the original text, the E-C translation of coordinate structures, and post-editing.In this report, she mainly focuses on the E-C translation of coordinate structures. The research questions are as follows:(1)What are the difficulties in translating coordinate structures?(2)How to translate them?(3)Why does the author translate the coordinate structures from English to Chinese in such a way?In order to deal with these questions, the author discusses the translation of coordinate structures from English to Chinese from the perspective of Verschueren’s linguistic adaptation theory, especially the structural and contextual correlates of adaptability, connected with the characteristics of coordinate structures in both two languages. The author finds 259 coordinate structures in the selected chapters with different coordinators and functions, carrying diverse meanings. The author selects 37 coordinate structures as the subject of the case analysis part, and concludes seven translation methods used for coordinate structures:retainment, omission, amplification, division, conversion, transposition, and blending, and classifies them based on the seven translation methods. In the sixth chapter, combined with the features of coordinate structures in English and Chinese, the characteristics of both languages themselves, and other supporting evidence, she gives an analysis of each case, and explains in detail the reasons why she chooses the translation method, with the help of the structural correlates and contextual correlates in the linguistic adaptation theory, making the translation more convincing. This report may make contributions to the classification of the coordinate structures, the E-C translation methods of coordinate structures. The author also admits at the end of the report that the report has its limitations due to insufficient examples and corpus, and suggests the following scholars research on other rare coordinators or other special functions of some common ones. |
