As a non-renewable and important strategic resource, petroleum is of great significance to the development of the country.Due to the accelerating process of global integration, petroleum economics is becoming more and more important in the global economy. The dramatic increase in cross-national interactions in the petroleum industry has placed an even greater importance on the translation of petroleum economics texts.Petroleum economics text translation expects to provide detailed background information on the petroleum business for professionals concerned.A summary of the translation strategies and methods of petroleum economic texts may provide references for the translation of petroleum economic texts. This report is based on the translation of Introduction to Petroleum Economics(Chapters 1-4),which focuses on cash flows, related cash flows, calculation of cash flows, and fiscal policies of various countries. The source language text belongs to the category of petroleum economic texts and focuses on the dissemination of information. Therefore, the application of Functional Equivalence Theory helps to achieve accurate communication of information between the source text and the translated text.Guided by Functional Equivalence Theory, the report examined translation problems at lexical, syntactic, and textual levels. In terms of vocabulary, the translator analyzed polysemy and technical terms.Technical terms and polysemy were dealt with by consulting specialist dictionaries and analyzing the context for fluency and accuracy of the translation. At the syntactic level, the translator mainly adopted methods such as readjustment, division and changing the voice to deal with the information content of the source text flexibly. In the translation of the textual coherence and cohesion, the translator adopts the translation method of restoring the referential meaning and omitting the hypernyms.Through these methods, the translator attempted to make the translation effective in conveying the message of the source text and to improve its accuracy and readability. This report expects to further extend the application of Functional Equivalence Theory, and provide references to the standardization of translations of petroleum economic texts.
