With Skopos theory as the theoretical framework, the thesis studies a new trend of translation research--audio description(AD)and explores the applicability of Skopos theory in AD which is an intersemiotic translation activity. The thesis aims at analyzing the linguistic features of English AD with the aid of three fundamental rules of Skopos theory. As a case study, numerous examples from the AD script of the movie Jane Eyre are analyzed to identify main linguistic features of English AD on the lexical, syntactic, and grammatical levels. Some distinctive features of English AD are presented in the thesis. On the lexical level,English AD always applies artfully-used verbs, participle adjectives and "as" used as a preposition or a conjunction. On the syntactic level, the sentences in English AD are almost declarative, and short sentences are preferred. There are also many present participles as adverbials as well as sentence-initial adverbials of time or space. On the grammatical level, the simple present tense and active voice are favored in English AD,and prepositions are always used consecutively or in phrases. After analyzing over one hundred examples, the author finds that Skopos theory is applicable and helpful in AD study.Guided by Skopos theory, audio describers should fully consider the real needs of the special target audience and increase the language quality of AD to meet its purposes. At present, supported by a series of policies, audio description has been known by more people.Relevant facilities and voluntary services have also been improved. In China, more scholars from different fields including translation and interpretation have paid close attention to the legitimate rights and needs of blind and visually-impaired people, and have conducted more research on AD.As a case study of the linguistic features of English AD,the thesis expects to inspire further research and practice of AD so that more blind and visually-impaired people can be benefited.
