Usability Of Terminology-Assistance In Chinese To English Simultaneous Interpretation

This study explores the usability of terminology assistance in Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation using InterpretBank software as an example.In this field,past researches have achieved many results,but there are still some shortcomings.First,previous empirical studies lacked consideration of realistic scenarios in the experimental settings,such as ignoring the technical limitations.Meanwhile,previous studies focusing mainly on the effectiveness of terminology assistance while ignoring the overall usability.In addition,there lacked studies on Chinese-to-English interpretation.Based on the above problems,this study measures the usability of terminology assistance software through Chinese-to-English simultaneous interpretation experiments,and sets up an experimental control group with more open conditions.According to definition of usability in ISO standards,this study investigates the usability of terminology assistance tools in terms of usage efficiency,effectiveness,and satisfaction,and asks three research questions:How efficient is InterpretBank terminology assistance tool compared with traditional methods,2)How effective is InterpretBank in use,and 3)How satisfying is it?The study adopts an empirical research method and conducted two experiments on 8 subjects and asked them to do Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation using the traditional terminology assistance and the InterpretBank terminology assistance tool.The experiments measured the efficiency,effectiveness and satisfaction of using terminology assistance by timing the using of terminology assistance,the correctness of terminology interpretation and the overall performance,and a questionnaire,respectively.Finally,this study found that subjects’ efficiency in terminology interpretation increased by 23.1%;in the effectiveness dimension,interpreters’ overall scores increased by 2.4 points and terminology interpretation correctness increased by 16.7%;in terms of satisfaction,the overall satisfaction of the subjects using InterpretBank was 83.4%.In addition,this study also proposes suggestions of using and developing terminology assistance based on some situation observed and some drawbacks found in the experiment.
