A Report On The Translation Of "Testing Of Construction Materials"

In September 2022,the author was commissioned by Jinan Shijin Group to translate training materials for its employees.The source text was extracted from Testing of Construction Materials.Scientific and technological writing use concise and professional language,requiring high fidelity of its translation.Based on accurate understanding of the source text,a translator should also refer to the needs of the target audience and use language that conform to Chinese expression habits.In translation,the author adopted the workflow of machine translation-post editing.Under the framework of "Comprehension,Expression,Adaptation",the author explored the following issues in this translation report:in the first section,the author expounded on how to understand technical terms,testing procedures and ambiguous expressions;in the second section,the author discussed how to translate passive voice and deal with nominalization in expression;in the third section,the author explained how to make explicit the implied logical relationship between sentences by adaptation,and how to make addition and correct mistakes in the source text.In terms of comprehension,translators should make full use of online resources for investigation and verification,as well as refer to contexts and illustrations in the book to ensure accuracy in comprehension;in terms of expression,translators should fully understand the differences in expression habits between Chinese and English,transforming passive structure into active voice when appropriate,and reduce the noun plague through lexical conversion and omission,so as to make the translation more acceptable to target readers;As for adaptation,translators should sort out the logical relationships between sentences and make the implicit logical relationships explicit.Additions are also preferred when doing so can benefit translation flow.It is hoped that this translation report will provide reference for translators of scientific and technical texts and shed some light on the translation of technical training materials.
