| Nowadays, globalization is accelerating like never before. The rapid growth of streaming media technology has also made the cultural exchange and the translation of foreign programs more frequent than ever.More and more Chinese people now enjoy TV programs produced in other countries with streaming platforms. This study chooses the British medical show This is Going to Hurt as the research subject for the fact that this TV show is rich in modalities and modal relations.Besides, most of the meaning-making process is made possible through interactions between different modalities which makes the synthetic framework for multimodal discourse analysis of Zhang Delu a suitable theoretical framework.Since the debut of this framework, there have been numerous studies applying the framework to subtitle translation from the macro perspective.Based on Zhang Delu’s framework, this study adopts the micro perspectives and focuses on the different relationships between modalities and explores suitable subtitle translation strategies under different relationships. This study delves into the five modal relations that appear in This is Going to Hurt:enhancement-highlighting,enhancement-primary-secondary,enhancement-expanding,non-enhancement-intersecting,and non-enhancement-coordination,and explores the translation strategies used under different relations.Through detailed case analysis,it is found that in highlighting,primary-secondary,and expanding relations, free translation is the main translation strategy;in intersecting relations, literal translation is the main strategy;and in coordination relations, free translation is the main translation strategy.Among the five main modal relations, four of them adopt free translation as the translation strategy. This is because free translation can better combine different modalities and convey original meanings more clearly, providing a better viewing experience for the target language audience. This study uses Zhang Delu’s synthetic theoretical framework for multimodal discourse analysis to explore how different modal relations affect the selection of translation strategies. It is hoped that this study can contribute to the subtitle translation of medical TV shows. |
