| As a carrier of social conscience,the documentary plays a vital role in cultural dissemination and spiritual salvation.This is exactly the case with And Yet the Books,a Chinese documentary which tells the stories of writers,makers and translators hidden behind the books.Its popularity proved that it can help people rekindle the fire of reading and inspire their reflection on culture and life,thus "detoxifying" the media ecology.Guided by Hu Gengshen’s Neo-ecosophy of translation,this thesis explores how Eco-translation methods help realize a desirable subtitle by analyzing specific examples from the author’s subtitle translation practice of And Yet the Books,based on three major translation difficulties:language style diversity,time-space constraint,and sound-picture synchronization.This report starts with introducing the research background,the documentary and its significance.Then it presents the translation progress,including pre-preparations,the analysis of the difficulties and the post-translation revisions,which followed by a theoretical basis that looks into the Neo-ecosophy of translation,and elaborates on ten Eco-translation methods.Through specific cases,this thesis discusses in detail how to tackle the translation difficulties under the guidance of the Neo-ecosophy of translation,so as to offer the audience a smooth and idiomatic subtitle.The present study finds that:1)for diverse language styles,extending substitution,adaptive addition,and source-contextualization can be adopted to render colloquial expressions to eliminate cultural barriers,naturalization and vitalization are effective for poetic sentences so that audiences can fully appreciate the beauty of Chinese;extending substitution is effective in rendering internet buzzwords;2)for time-space constraints,adaptive reduction and extending substitution can be applied in translating four-character expressions,Chinese proverbs and the redundancy so that the audience can understand the subtitles with the least effort;3)text-balancing scrutinization and multi-transformation work well in ensuring the synchronization of sound and pictures,making the subtitle easily accessible while aesthetically pleasing,thus enabling the target audience to obtain a joyful viewing experience in the blending of sound,picture and subtitle.This study expects to have helpful references to offer subtitle translation of documentaries in the future. |
