| Television series belong to mass media. It is a carrier of social culture. For foreign films and TV series, the importance of the subtitle translation, which is "a written piece of translated dialogue superimposed at the bottom of the frame during a film" or TV series and which helps audience overcome the problems of language and culture barrier that prevent them from comprehension, is gradually highlighted.This paper intends to view subtitle translation from the perspective of cultural schema, and attempts to find proper methods for subtitle translation.Introduction mainly introduces literature review, the significance of the study, the structure of the thesis, and the methodology that is applied in this thesis. This is an interdisplinary study of literature translation and screen and video and the possible findings and suggestions for subtitle translation can benefit both domains of study. Systematic analysis of main ideas and case study will be adopted in this study.In the second part, an overview of subtitle and subtitle translation is offered, including definition, features, and constraints. Subtitle is a dialogue or fragment of a dialogue appearing at the bottom of the screen as a translation from the original foreign languages to the viewer's native language. It's the outcome of condensing the original oral language into written language. It has six distinctive features:being written, being addictive, being immediate, being synchronous, being polymediacal, and being popular, and it has restrictions in terms of space and time.The third part gives an elaboration of the schema theory and cultural schema. Key points of cultural schema and its relation with translation are summed up in this section.In Chapterâ…£an analysis of the subtitle translation of Gossip Girl will be adopted to assist the exploration of subtitle translation methods from the perspective of cultural schema. Classified cultural elements in culture correspondent schemata and culture divergent schemata will first be presented, and next goes the solutions for translation problems in cultural contexts from the point of cultural schemata.Chapterâ…¤is the last part and findings, implications and limitations of this study are to be found here. |
