| At present,our country is in the key period of high-quality economic development and service-oriented government construction.There is also a wave of enthusiasm for civil service across the country,with college graduates taking the exam in high demand,especially in Shandong province,which is heavily influenced by Confucian culture.For example,the phenomenon of civil servants’ "examination Tours" in Shandong has aroused public concern and heated debate.On the other hand,occupational preference,as an individual’s basic choice preference,affects the structure of the labor market and then the level of economic development through influencing occupational choice,which is the core topic concerned by labor economics and other fields.It is of great significance to explore the influencing factors of civil servants’ career choice preference for understanding labor market phenomena and regional differences.This study focuses on whether the special preference of Shandong people for civil servants and other jobs within the system is related to the influence of Confucian culture.Through what channels does Confucian culture influence people’s preference for career choice?In order to answer these questions,this study empirically examines the influence of Confucian culture on civil servants’ career choice preference,and especially explores the transmission mechanism between the Confucian culture and civil servants’ career choice preference.This study collected the micro survey data of undergraduates in Shandong University by means of questionnaire,used the multi-stage dual selection method to measure the different degree of civil servant career choice preference and the preference value of civil servant career choice,and used the geographical distance method to measure the degree of influence of Confucian culture.In addition,Perry’s public service motivation Scale was used to measure the tendency of public service motivation,which includes four dimensions:self-sacrifice,compassion,attraction of public policy making and public interest commitment.The empirical results show that:(1)the level of Confucian culture significantly affects the degree of civil servant career choice preference,and the deeper the degree of Confucian culture influence,the more preferred civil servant career;(2)Public service motivation is the intermediary variable of Confucian culture and civil servants’ career choice preference.Confucian culture influences civil servants’ career choice preference by influencing public service motivation.The deeper Confucian culture is,the stronger the public service motivation is,and the more civil servants’ career preference is;(3)There are significant differences between civil servants in Shandong Province and non-Shandong province in career choice preference and participation in civil service examination,which may also be related to the influence of Confucian culture.In general,Confucian culture has influenced the preference of career choice,adjusted the structure of local labor market,and influenced the level of local economic development.By introducing the cultural perspective into the selection of public service occupations,this study enriches the relevant researches of cultural economics and labor economics.By influencing the motivation of public service and the career preference of civil servants,Confucian culture has an impact on the distribution of labor force and the quality of civil service in a specific area,and further affects the level of local economic development.It is also important for understanding regional differences in economic structure and the quality of development. |
