As a pioneer in functional theories,Katharina Reiss introduces the text functions as a standard for translation criticism in her Translation Criticism: The Potentials & Limitations.Reiss classifies the source texts into content-focused texts,form-focused texts,appeal-focused texts, and audio-media texts, and applies this classification into translation criticism.Reiss’ s translation criticism theory proves the possibility of objective evaluation of translation from the perspective of text types, linguistic and extra-linguistic elements. This paper selects the Fishery Handbook Joining Forces to Shape the Fishery Sector of Tomorrow of FAO(Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)as the translation source text.Reiss’ s translation criticism theory provides the paper with scientific and practical guidance because of its positive role in choosing appropriate translation strategies in the process of translation.Based on Reiss’ s translation criticism theory and combined with specific translation cases, the paper identifies the source text as the fishery text and conducts a detailed analysis into it from the perspective of text types, linguistic and extra-linguistic elements.Based on the above analysis, the paper summarizes the translation strategies for the fishery text. Finally,a conclusion is made that the fishery text can be classified into content-focused text because it is characteristic of being well-conceived,objective and accurate. In the translation of the fishery text, linguistic and extra-linguistic elements should be taken into full consideration. However, the first priority is to translate precisely and accurately.Only when the target text fulfills its intended functions can the translation be a success. This paper not only fills the gap of reflections on the fishery text in the translation practice reports, but also fills the gap in the application of Reiss’ s translation criticism theory into the translation practice of the fishery text. |
