| With the rapid development of news media,people could learn much information about the world through news reports.News reports often convey some subjective evaluations proved by many researches.These evaluations could subtly affect the ideologies of readers.Martin proposed appraisal theory to analyze these evaluations from different perspectives.The attitude resources in some discourse have been analyzed by a great number of scholars based on the theory.There are many attitude resources in the news reports concerning doctors from China Daily.The analysis of these resources reveals the attitudes towards doctors in the news reports and the image of doctors shaped by these news reports.The corpus of this thesis consists of 50 news reports concerning doctors published by China Daily in 2019 and 2020.From the perspective of appraisal theory,the categories and distribution of these attitude resources in the news reports,as well as the functions of these attitude resources are figured out by quantitative and qualitative methods.The following three questions are answered respectively.1)What is the distribution of the attitude resources in the news reports concerning doctors published by China Daily in 2019 and 2020? 2)How are the attitude resources realized in these news reports concerning doctors? 3)What are the functions of these attitude resources in the news reports concerning doctors?The statistical results show that the two-year news reports convey all kinds of attitude resources.The frequency of positive attitude resources is higher than that of negative ones.Among affect,judgement and appreciation resources,the judgement resources occupy the largest proportion.The positive judgement resources outnumber the positive affect and appreciation resources.Besides,the frequency of negative judgement resources is also the most.These editors pay attention to the evaluations on in/security,capacity,tenacity,propriety and valuation.In addition,the attitude resources in the two-year news reports have some differences.Compared with the news reports published in 2019,these published in 2020 convey more positive and negative security and capacity resources,as well as more positive tenacity resources,but less positive and negative propriety resources.The realization of these attitude resources in the two-year news reports are also different.In the news reports published in 2019,the main objects of these evaluations ranked by frequency are some doctors working in urban areas,many patients and their family members,some doctors offering assistance in foreign countries,these working in the countryside and these offering assistance in remote areas in China.However,in the news reports published in 2020,the main objects of these evaluations are some doctors fighting against the COVID-19,many patients infected with the disease and the family members of these doctors.These changes highlight the insecurity,capacity and tenacity of the doctors who fought against the COVID-19.These changes also help to shape the image of these doctors,increase the trust of people in these doctors and reassure people.The attitude resources in these news reports have three functions,namely to shape a positive image of doctors,to show some characteristics of patients and to criticize those people attacking doctors.The thesis enriches the researches of the attitude resources in news reports by comparing the news reports concerning doctors.It demonstrates how to understand and express attitude resources.It is helpful to cultivate the critical awareness of people,improve their skills in reading and communication,and deepen their understanding of doctors for the purpose of calling on them to understand and respect doctors. |
