| In the year of 2019,Donald Trump,the president of the United States at the time,imposed a series of tech sanctions on Chinese companies such as Huawei,Byte Dance and Xiao Mi.It was a prelude to the technology conflicts between China and the United States,and the issue received a lot of coverage in mainstream newspapers in both countries.The news reports in both countries contain a large amount of attitudinal resources.These Attitude resources reflect the views,stances and ideologies of the country or relevant political parties on this series of events,which has its research value.Based on the Appraisal Theory and its Attitude subsystem,this thesis analyzes the Attitude resources of Chinese and American news reports on the Sino-America technology conflicts.In this study,a self-built small corpus was applied,and the corpus is selected from China Daily,Global Times,Washington Daily News,USA Today and other mainstream Chinese and American newspapers.Among them,30articles（22,978 words）are from the China side（in English）and 30 articles（21,239words）from the US side,for a total of 44,217 words.Considering the reality of multi-party governance in the United States,when selecting news reports from the US side,this thesis deliberately selected mainstream newspapers with different political backgrounds,including neutral ones,those who support the Republican Party and those who support the Democratic Party,with the attempt to find out whether media with different political backgrounds have different Attitudes resources in reporting this issue.In this thesis,the software UAM Corpus Tool 3.3 is used for Corpus annotation.This study tries to answer the following research questions:（1）What is the distribution of Attitude resources in these Sino-America technology conflicts news reports?（2）What are the similarities and differences in the distribution of Attitude resources in these Sino-America technology conflicts news reports?（3）What are the reasons for the distribution differences in these Sino-America technology conflicts news reports?The main findings of this study are as follows.First,in the news reports on Sino-America technology conflicts,the most frequently used Attitude resources are judgment resources.Second,although the starting point of both countries is to safeguard their own lawful rights and interests,they have not blindly blamed each other.Many news reports objectively analyze the advantages and disadvantages of this technology conflicts by acknowledging the strengths of the other country and looking at the rationality of the whole incident from a long-term perspective.News reports from China and America side apply lots of Judgement resources,and both focus on the judgement of propriety,which reveals that both countries pay close attention to the actions taken by the other.But the focusing points of the two sides show different tendencies due to the differences in political background and ideologies.In news reports from Chinese mainstream newspapers,this has been reflected in denouncing a series of US restrictions and sanctions on Chinese companies.In America side,those pro-Trump newspapers denounced Chinese companies for the alleged conspiracy.Those neutral and pro-Democratic newspapers tend to analyze the disadvantages of the unreasonable bans issued by Trump administration on both China and the United States.This study has both theoretical and practical significance.Above all,this thesis enriches the research content of Appraisal Theory and Attitude resources,especially using the Attitude subsystem of Appraisal Theory to analyze news discourse.Different from other Chinese and English bilingual Attitude resources analysis on news reports of the same issue,the corpus of this study is of English-English.The study of the same language can reduce analytical ambiguity caused by English-Chinese linguistic differences.Secondly,this study conducts an Attitude resources study of the current issue that attracts the most attention between China and the United States,which is conducive to a deeper interpretation and understanding of this issue.It helps to reveal information that is difficult to obtain from the perspective of traditional Journalism and lay a linguistic foundation for China to occupy a favorable position in the technology conflicts.It is hoped that this study can be of benefit to the study of Attitude resources based on Appraisal Theory and provide some references for the subsequent related studies. |
