The reading circles model is teachers select materials--teachers organize groups--group members independently read and write role forms--group discussion--teachers’ supplementary information--presentation and evaluation. This model has been widely used in language teaching abroad and has achieved good teaching results.A mixed research method combining quantitative and qualitative research was used in this study.Based on cooperative learning, constructivism, and the zone of proximal developmental theories, this study was conducted for four months with 107 students in Grade one of a high school in Nanchang. The students in the CC received the traditional reading model, while the EC used the reading circles model.Through test to explore what effect on the students’ reading performance after the reading circles model is applied to reading teaching? This study investigated students’ attitudes toward reading in three dimensions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral.Based on the survey results to analyze what changes are the students’ attitudes toward reading after the reading circles teaching model is applied to reading teaching? The study results showed: that first, students’ interest in reading increased. The discussion session in which group members think and share effectively enhances students’ interest in reading. The students in the EC will take the initiative to do extra-curricular English reading.Students will discuss the issues based on the questions raised by their groups. They will be more active and motivated to participate in all aspects of the reading process.Second, the students in the EC increased their average scores more than the students in the CC.It proves that applying the reading circles model to reading teaching can effectively improve students’ reading performance.Students will discuss the issues based on the questions raised by their groups and will be more active and motivated to participate in all aspects of the reading process. In addition, the combination of independent reading and cooperative group reading format can effectively promote students’ independent inquiry and cooperative learning.Students layer on the reading level rather than staying at the surface level of understanding the reading material by answering textbook questions. The whole process will effectively increase the willingness and confidence of students to participate in the classroom. Therefore, the reading circles model plays an active role in teaching English reading in high school. |
