As a merit cave in Zhang Yichao,Cave 156 of Mogao Grottoes is one of the representative caves of Dunhuang Grottoes. In addition to the dance images in the classic paintings in the cave, the dance scenes in the two travel maps also truly reflect the scene of music and dance activities at that time, with rich contents and diverse factors. This paper mainly studies the dance images in Cave 156.In the first chapter, the dance images in Cave 156 are divided into two categories:Sutra painting dance and secular dance, and the dance images in Cave 156 are statistically sorted out. Then, according to the distribution of murals in the cave, the position, types and movements of dance images are summarized respectively, and each dance image in the cave is described and analyzed in detail. The second chapter explores the characteristics and forming factors of the Sutra painting dance and secular dance respectively. It can be seen that these Sutra painting dances not only have the elements of the Tang Dynasty palace dance, but also have the unique Buddhist dance characteristics of Dunhuang at that time. The unique dance style of Cave 156 was developed by the integration of the two.The two kinds of dances in the walking map are all performances of people singing and dancing in reality at that time. The third chapter combs the dance images in Tang Dynasty caves and makes a comparative study with the dance image elements drawn in Cave 156.Through the analysis,it can be concluded that the combination form of waist drum and rebound pipa dance first appeared in Cave 172,and then became horizontal pipa playing in Cave 156.Although the shape of the double towel dance has changed slightly,it is very similar to the double towel dance in Cave 159 in the middle Tang Dynasty as a whole, and it should be the powder version inherited from Cave 159 in the middle Tang Dynasty.Tubo dance with secular characteristics appeared at the top of the cave, which was directly related to the historical background at that time. The dance image in Dunhuang frescoes is an indispensable part of Dunhuang frescoes. Its role in grottoes is to reflect the ideological connotation of entertaining gods and worshiping Buddha, and it is also an important basis for studying Dunhuang dance style nowadays. It is this vivid dance image that leads to the emergence of Dunhuang dance with unique style and charm.
