The source text of this report is taken from the economics book Supply-Side Reform:China New Supply-Side Economics which gives an in-depth illustration of the social background and core content of “supply-side reform”,and focuses on creating an “upgraded” version of China’s sustainable economic development in the future. One of its authors,Dr.Jia Chun,is a member of the Economic Committee of the CPPCC and has participated in the formulation of national economic policies for many years. And the other author is Dr.Su Jingchun, working at the Chinese Academy of Fiscal Sciences. This translation project attempts to introduce China’s fine experience in macro-control to people at home and abroad as well as to provide insights on the lexical and syntactic transcription of economic texts to inspire future C-E translation practice. This translation task is guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative and semantic translation. The source text is excerpted from a simplified book that intends to introduce supply-side reform in a plain and understandable way for general readers.Correspondingly,in order to reproduce a close effect, its translation should also put the emphasis on target readers.Consequently, this translation task mainly adopted communicative translation. As a typical informative text, the source text is critical and accurate in composition.Lexically,it includes many economic terms and idioms.Considering non-specialist readers, authors of the original text demonstrate thoroughly so the text contains a large number of parentheses to explain professional information especially in long, complex sentences. These features of the source text form the main difficulties in this project. To reproduce a close effect on the target readers, economic terms are dealt with mainly by adding information, paraphrase and reference to parallel texts, while idioms by omission, defiguration and substitution.Three translation techniques including rendering into attributive clauses, shifting part of speech and splitting sentences contribute to the translation of parentheses.Prior to this project, the translator has limited translation experience in economics thus parallel texts did provide an important reference for her.Conforming to the informative function of the source text, the translation is oriented in the target language and is prudent and objective as most economic texts. It fluently conveys the content of the original and can provide a smooth reading experience for target readers.
