A Report On Chinese-english Translation Of Report On The Implementation Of The 2017 Plan For National Economic And Social Development And On The 2018 Draft Plan For National Economic And Social Development In Jiangbei District Of Ningbo City

The translation project selects “Report on the Implementation of the 2017 Plan for National Economic and Social Development and on the 2018 Draft Plan for National Economic and Social Development in Jiangbei District of Ningbo City” as translation material.In order to better publicize local development strategies of China,motivate international cooperation and exchanges,and promote regional economic development,the Chinese-English translation of this political text will be of certain significance.The project is an official document,characterized by utter seriousness.Therefore,the translator should be equipped with extreme rigor and accuracy.Functional equivalence theory,bringing a brand-new perspective to translation studies,is advanced by translation theorist Eugene A.Nida who proposes that translation does not pursue superficial correspondence,but aims to achieve functional equivalence between the two languages.The translator regards the functional equivalence theory as a guide to select appropriate translation techniques at different levels.At the lexical level,the translation report first analyzes the main features of words used in the source text,with focus on numeral abbreviations,words with Chinese as well as local characteristics,high-frequency verbs and economic terms,and in translation,translation techniques such as literal translation,free translation and literal translation plus annotation are used.At the syntactic level,there are three common sentence types: zero-subject sentences,long and complex sentences and parallel sentences,and translation techniques such as amplification,division,and conversion are applied in different occasions.This report,guided by functional equivalence theory,studies the translation practice with the main purposes of understanding the linguistic features of local official documents of China,exploring the translation methods of government documents,and improving the local official documents’ translation quality.In the meanwhile,the thesis can also help foreigners know more about Jiangbei district and promote its international exchanges and spread of Ningbo local culture.
