With the accelerating economic globalization, an increasing number of Chinese enterprises are participating in the international competition. Today, the bidding activity has become an important part for international economic activities. The international competitive bidding is adopted for many large-scale and medium-sized projects. According to the international practice, all the documents related to international bidding activities, including bidding documents, contracts, exchanged letters should be written in English. Even if they are written in other languages, a copy of English version should be enclosed. In case of the occurrence of ambiguity, disputes and arbitrations, the English version shall prevail. Hence, the translation of the bid documents is of vital importance.Currently, many researchers at home have been studying the bid documents from the perspective of traditional linguistics, and rarely have the translators applied some translation theories to guide the translation of the bid documents. This translation report is based on the translation project of the Bid Document of PLTU KALTIM TELUK BALIKPAPAN 2×100MW. The paper attempts to explore the translation strategies and techniques under the guidance of Nida’ functional theory through the detailed analysis of the lexical, syntactic, stylistic and contextual hallmarks of the bid documents and by presenting multiple examples and analysis in order to render people a further understanding of the bid documents and offer some advices. The report suggests that the functional equivalence turns out to be very feasible in guiding the translation of the bid documents due to the unique styles, for instance, use of formal, elaborate and solemn words and phrases, frequent adoption of declarative, imperative and complex sentences and sentences in passive voice and application of fixed formats. Translators can adopt such translation techniques as literal translation, conversion(conversion of voice and conversion of parts of speech), amplification, omission, and division, etc. to realize the equivalence in semantics, context, receptor’ s response and specially in style. The report also indicates that the relevant background knowledge, the understanding of some technologies and processes, and an earnest and responsible attitude are required for the translators of the bid documents.
