The present report is based on the translation of a french book titled 111 perfumes that you should smell before you die,which is published in 2018 and republished in2019.Edited by several authors who are recognized world while,this book is a collection of fragment reviews.With a delicate style of writing,a professional content and a brand new point of view,the book presents 116 world famous classic perfumes to the public by introducing the types of fragrance,their perfumer,front middle and back notes,the atmosphere created and the public reaction.In the process of translation,the problem of the translation of perfumes’ name aroused my attention.What is the purpose of translation? What kind of characters should these translated names have? How to translate? These questions deserve further consideration.With the guidance of Vermeer’s translation theory,the author of present report summarized the characteristics of perfumes’ translated names and analyzed the strategy of their translation based on the examples in the book.This report is divided into four chapters :The first chapter is a general description of the translation task.A detailed introduction to the task,the text content and its style was given in this part.For the second chapter,a brief review about the translation process is presented from the following three aspects: pre-translation preparation,translation process,and post-translation matters.The pre-translation preparation part mainly introduces the preparation work before officially beginning the translation,including reading related books,searching useful materials on the Internet,skimming through the full text,and marking the new words and the difficulties of understanding.When it comes to the translation process,translation strategy adopted by the author were mentioned.Besides,difficulties concerning the perfumes’ name translation were also clarified in this part.Lastly,the post-translation matters cover proofreading and editing of the translated work.The third chapter focuses on the central issue the author tackled in the translation process,which is the translation of perfumes’ name.The author first analyzes the nature of perfume as a merchandise and classifies the source of perfume naming,then analyzes the characteristics and purpose of perfume name translation,and finally analyzes the perfume name translation strategy in detail with examples.The objects are divided into two categories: perfumes with several translated names and perfumes without translated names.The author uses different translation methods to select or to create names for them.In the last chapter,the author summarized her own research on perfume name translation strategy and at the same time reflected on this translation practice.The author discovered her lack of experience in translation,but at the same time accumulated knowledge and got her translation level improved.Through the analysis,the author knows more how to apply flexibly the translation methods.What is more important is that the author gets a better understanding of translation and deeply feels the responsibility of a translator.
