| Eagleton is a well-known British Marxist theoretician, and his ideas have an important influence, among which the theory of tragedy also occupies an important position.Eagleton’s theory of tragedy is part of Marxist theory of tragedy, and combing through his theory of tragedy helps to expand the theoretical scope and theoretical depth of left-wing intellectuals.Eagleton’s theory of tragedy is also a reflection of modernity, offering a new perspective on modern society. This paper focuses on Eagleton’s theory of tragedy from three aspects. The first chapter analyzes the formation of Eagleton’s theory of tragedy.Eagleton’s theory of tragedy was a response to the low-ebb Marxist movement and the events of 9·11,and his working-class family background also influenced the theory of tragedy.Eagleton’s discussion of tragedy encountered ambiguity in definition,so a familial approach was introduced, including the art of tragedy, tragic events, and tragic ideas, and the expansion of the concept of tragedy showed the characteristics of cultural tragedy. The second chapter analyzes the connection between tragedy as a cultural critique and modern society.Eagleton opposed the theory of the demise of tragedy, arguing that modernity gave tragedy new life.Eagleton illustrates the theme of"incest" in tragedy, revealing the uncertainty of the self.Eagleton used tragedy to expose the false consciousness of the bourgeoisie and constitute a critique of capitalist society.Chapter three analyzes the pain in tragedy and the value of tragedy.Eagleton rejects the sublimeness of tragedy and the reconciliation of tragedy, refuting the instrumental interpretation of tragic suffering in the traditional sense.Through a reinterpretation of the theological concepts of sacrifice and martyrdom,Eagleton finds compensatory values for tragedy that are transformed by the pain of tragedy. There is an element of violence in tragedy, and the pain that cannot be transformed becomes a symbol of magic and evil. |
