The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC)has made much progress since its launch in April 2015.However,Pakistan’s internal security is not optimistic due to a variety of reasons. In this context, the translation material is selected—Security and the Belt and Road: A Critical Analysis of Threats to Chinese Nationals and Businesses in Pakistan,a chapter from the book China’s Belt and Road Initiative in a Global Context Volume II: The China Pakistan Economic Corridor and its Implications for Business. The translation material belongs to the category of social science literature. The source text is featured by abundance of nominalization, passive sentences and long and difficult sentences.Meanwhile,Chinese and English vary in word formation, grammar and syntactic structure. In order to achieve a faithful and smooth target text, the translator needs to make necessary adjustments in the process of translation. Thus, translation shifts occur.Catford defines translation shifts as “departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from the SL(source language)to the TL(target language)”,and later divides it into two types—level shifts and category shifts. The translator applies these two types of shifts to this translation practice.Practice has proved that the necessary shifts in language units is helpful to improve the readability and accuracy of the translation. In view of the particularity of the source text, the translator has encountered some problems that cannot be solved by Catford’s translation shift theory. And that gives support to the limitation of Catford’s translation shift theory: it only focuses on the elements in one sentence and neglects the translator’s subjectivity.Based on this, the translator boldly takes the initiative to adopt the methods of addition and deletion so as to eliminate the “comprehension confusion” of the target readers and maintain the reputation of her own country. This report is divided into six chapters.Chapter one briefly introduces the translation background, source text and research significance.Chapter two describes the procedures of this translation practice, namely preparation, translation process and post-translation.Chapter three is the introduction of Catford’s translation shift theory, which is divided into three parts: an overview of Translation Shift Theory, the applicability of Translation Shift Theory and limitations of Translation Shift Theory.Chapter four is case analysis, reflecting the guiding effect of translation shift theory in translation practice.Chapter five describes the role of the translator’s subjectivity in this translation practice through two cases, and Chapter six is conclusion.
