A Discussion Of The Japanese Chinese Words Mixed In San Tendai Godai Sanki

As the neighbors connected by waters,China and Japan have frequent culture exchanges.During the years of Shenzong in the Northern Song Dynasty,Japanese monk Jyoujin came to China for visiting and learning.He wrote his experiences and insights in San Tendai Godai Sanki(Records of visiting Tiantai Mountain and Wutai Moutain).The book was written in Chinese recording a large number of colloquial language and new words of the Northern Song Dynasty,which provides new materials and perspectives for the study of the Song Dynasty Chinese language.However,influenced by the author’s native language,the book contains not only Chinese words,but also a lot of Japanese Chinese words,increasing the difficulty of using the book as language materials for Chinese ancient language studies.Therefore,this thesis first discusses the textual nature of San Tendai Godai Sanki,affirms its value as Chinese ancient language materials.Stripping out the Japanese Chinese words in the book,the thesis explains and analyses these Japanese Chinese words,so that the book can serve the studies of Chinese language history better.This thesis contains five chapters:Chapter one briefly introduces Jyoujin’s life experience,the contents of San Tendai Godai Sanki,and its’ current versions.Secondly,it analyzses the current research situation of the book,putting forward the key question discussed in this thesis.The second chapter discusses the research value of San Tendai Godai Sanki.This part analyzes the background of Jyoujin’s time,his Chinese level and the new grammartical phenomenon showing in the book to judge the textual nature of the book.Then the thesis briefly discusses its research value as language materials.The third chapter sorts out the self‐sufficient words(自立语)in Japanese mixed in San Tendai Godai Sanki,the Japanese nouns,verbs,adverbs,and adjectives appearing in the book are discussed.The meanings of these words are examined,and the usage of self-supporting words is summarized and briefly classified in the end.Chapter four collates the Japanese attached words(付属语)in San Tendai Godai Sanki.Since some Japanese words do not have corresponding words in Chinese,the Japanese use some Chinese words which have relating meanings to some Japanese words as attached words,mainly as auxiliary words and conjunctions in the book.This part explains the meaning of the words,categorizes and briefly summarizes the usage of these words.Chapter five talks about the Japanese honorific words(敬语词)in San Tendai Godai Sanki,explaining the meanings of these words,categorizes and summarizes the usage of them.Finally,the thesis’ s content is summarized,and I hope that it could provide help for the San Tendai Godai Sanki or other Chinese language studies.
