Movie title is like the eye of a movie.The translation of film titles is a cross-cultural communication behavior with high requirements on the translator’s knowledge reserve and comprehensive ability.China has been actively or passively importing a large number of foreign films,of which American films account for the largest proportion and influence.In addition to the advantages of American films in terms of production and content,the Chinese translation of American film titles plays a significant role in opening up the Chinese market.This paper mainly studies the Chinese translation of American film titles.The development history of American films in China is reviewed,which shows that American films are very important in Chinese film market.It is also found that 1920—1939 and 2000—2019 are two extremely important periods in the development history of American films.Therefore,the American film titles of these two periods are selected as the research object of this paper,statistics and analysis the translation methods used in the Chinese translation of American film titles and the changes of translation methods.We found that the number and proportion of double titles in Chinese translation of American film titles in 2000 — 2019 increased significantly compared with that in 1920 —1939.The proportion of literal translation and the other translation increased,while that of free translation decreased obviously.And there is a new method of serialized mode translation.However,no matter in 1929—1939 or 2000—2009,the translation methods were mainly focused on the free translation,literal translation and the other translation methods,and the translated names were mainly four-character case,far superior to other case.From the perspective of the information value,cultural value,aesthetic value and commercial value of film title translation,analyze the reasons for the above changes and non-changes.And the change of film title translation methods due to film title promotion function of desalination,movie audience scope changes,the American film production mode changes,and Social cultural and psychological changes in China,and analyze it,then points out the existing problems,and make brief recommendations at the same time,provide reference for Chinese translation of American film titles.
