The Influence Of Audiovisual Dual Modality Congruent Emotion On Inhibition Of Return

Both inhibition of return(IOR)and emotion have the characteristics of attentional bias and improving search efficiency.So whether there is a certain interaction between the two has attracted the attention from researchers.Existing studies mostly used single modality presentation of emotional stimuli to investigate the relationship between the two,but the results of the research are not consistent,and the relationship between the two is still controversial.Previous studies have shown that the processing of emotion and IOR is in two different stages when identifying single modality visual emotion.So they do not interact with each other.When emotion and IOR occur in the same processing stage,it is necessary to further research whether there is a certain interaction between the two.Emotional stimuli can also be presented through audiovisual dual modality.The congruent emotion of audiovisual dual modality can be integrated into the perceptual stage,which is the same as the processing stage of IOR.Therefore,this study uses audiovisual dual modality to present emotional stimuli to further investigate the interaction between emotion and IOR.The classic cue-target paradigm was used in this study,and the central reorienting event(central cue)was added between the cue and the target to induce more stabler IOR.Cue and central cue were presented in a visual single modality,and the presentation of target stimuli was divided into visual single modality emotional stimuli and audiovisual dual modality emotional stimuli.The task of the subjects was to identify the emotional stimuli of visual modality.In Experiment 1,emotion was presented as a single modality visual face or a congruent audiovisual dual modality(visual negative face-auditory negative sound;visual neutral face-auditory neutral sound).There was an interaction between emotion and IOR in the condition of audiovisual dual modality,which shows that congruent negative emotion produces less IOR effect(11 ms)than neutral emotion(25 ms).At the same time,the audiovisual dual modality condition produces less IOR effect(18 ms)than the visual single modality condition(40 ms).This indicates that IOR and audiovisual dual modality congruent emotion in the same processing stage have a mutual influence.Audiovisual dual modality congruent emotion can weaken the IOR effect and show the adaptability of IOR.Experiment 2 was based on Experiment 1,which changed the emotional congruous of audiovisual dual modality stimuli,that is,the audiovisual dual modality presented incongruent emotion stimuli(visual negative face-auditory neutral sound;visual neutral face-auditory negative sound)to further investigate whether the impact of the audiovisual dual modality emotional stimulus on IOR was caused by the emotional stimulus of the auditory modality,that is,whether the emotional stimulus of the auditory modality has been processed.The results showed that there was no interaction between emotion and IOR under the condition of audiovisual dual modality,and there was no significant difference in IOR effect between single modality and audiovisual dual modality.This indicates that the IOR effect will not be affected by the presence of incongruent emotion in audiovisual dual modality.In summary,the research shows that the IOR effect is affected only when the audiovisual dual modality present the same emotion.At the same time,this study further supports the perceptual inhibition theory of IOR.
