| Ponser and Cohen(1984)found that when the time interval between the cue and the target was more than 300 ms,the targets’ reaction to the previously noticed target or position may be inhibited, which is called inhibition of return(IOR).Furthermore, the process by which an individual integrates information from visual and auditory into a unified, coherent, and meaningful perceptual process which is called audiovisual integration.Tang et al.(2019)found in behavioral studies that, compared with the IOR effect induced by a single visual target, the IOR effect induced by a biomodal audiovisual target was weakened under the condition of biomodal divided attention(paying attention to both visual and auditory modals),indicating that the audiovisual integration has a regulatory effect on the IOR.During the study of the mechanisms of the IOR,a two-component theory suggests that the IOR contains two components: a motion-related oculomotor component and a perception-related attention component. However,it is not clear whether the effect of the audiovisual IOR is based on the. This paper further explores the mechanism of the IOR and the effect of the simultaneous auditory stimuli on the visual IOR effect through eye movement experiments.Based on the cue-target paradigm, this study manipulated the two independent variables of target stimulus type(visual, audiovisual)and cue effectiveness(valid and invalid),and investigated the effect of simultaneous auditory stimuli on IOR through three experiments.Experiment 1(auditory stimuli in the central position)investigated the effect of auditory stimuli on the oculomotor IOR under the condition of selective attentional visual modals. The results show that both visual and audiovisual targets produce oculomotor IOR,and the differences between them are significant.Experiment 2 changed the spatial position of auditory stimuli(left/right)to investigate the effect of auditory stimuli on oculomotor IOR under the condition of selective attention visual modal. The results show that both visual and audiovisual targets have IOR effect, and the difference between them is significant.Experiment 3(auditory stimuli on the left/right side)changed the modal attention conditions to further investigate the effect of auditory stimuli on oculomotor IOR effect under biomodal distributive attention conditions. The results show that the visual target produces oculomotor IOR,while the audiovisual target does not. This paper reveals that, under the condition of two modals of different attention, simultaneous auditory stimuli and visual targets produce audiovisual integration and thus weaken the audiovisual oculomotor inhibition of return. |
