This is a report on translation of Chapter 15 and 16 of The Stories in the Ming Dynasty(Volume One),written by Dangnian Mingyue.The report mainly includes the description of translation process,guiding theory and translation methods.The writer depicts a lot of important and far-reaching historical figures and events of the Ming Dynasty in a witty way of narration.Although the books have been published,Dangnian Mingyue initially began his work on a bulletin board system.The language of the books is quite different from that of other history classics.Except from the writer’s personal aspiration of making the history comprehensible for all the people,instead of merely academics,the internet writing environment is another vital factor.In this report,the author has a necessary analysis of the language style of the source text as well as the characteristic of the internet literature.The translation practice is under the guidance of cultural translation theory.Susan Bassnett’s cultural functional equivalence theory provides a scientific perspective for translation.The report lays emphasis on the translation of the culture-loaded words,rhetoric and witty languages.On the basis of analysis of the culture-loaded words in the source text,some translation methods and techniques are applied,such as literal translation with annotation,addition and free translation.In addition,the translation of the rhetoric is analyzed and some translation methods are adopted including literal translation,omission and free translation.For the translation of the humorous language,there are some translation methods and techniques adopted such as literal translation,addition,free translation and annotation.This report consists of five chapters:the first chapter is the introduction to the translation practice.The second chapter is the translation process description,including preparation before translation,while-translation and after-translation.The third chapter is a brief introduction to the cultural translation theory,which mainly includes the relationship between culture and translation,as well as the theory of cultural functional equivalence.The fourth chapter is the analysis of translation methods,including the detailed description of the translation methods of culture-loaded words,rhetoric and humorous language.The fifth chapter is the conclusion,including the approach summary of the translation practice and suggestions for the relevant translation.
