| Conjunctions are functional words, which are frequently used, especially in written texts.Novels reflect a period of social status and people’s spiritual desire, and gradually become an important indicator to measure a country’s literary status. The combination of the two not only helps to compare the register differences of the novel, but also helps to summarize the usage rules of conjunctions in real corpus.Following the steps of MD analysis, established by Douglas Biber(1988)is a set of stylistic differences research methods combining quantitative and qualitative, this paper first counts the frequency of 60 high-frequency conjunctions in 600 texts of six types of novels and normalizes them. Then,SPSS factor analysis is used to simplify the data. Finally, completing the factor analysis and naming.Seven functional dimensions were obtained:solemnity and logic, information concentration, topic continuation and event evaluation, position expression, information supplement, highlighting the focus and reasoning expression. In addition,ANOVA and a post-hoc multiple test were used to infer the descriptive differences. It was found that the six types of novels have significant differences in the seven aggregation dimensions. Finally, radar charts are used to present the distribution of the novels in seven functional dimensions, summarize differences and explain the reasons.Although it is impossible to comprehensively summarize the register differences of novels only from the perspective of conjunctions, the unique research perspective of this paper not only enriches the research results of conjunctions and novels, but also provides reference for Chinese learners to select reading texts,Chinese conjunction teaching at home and abroad, novel translation and creation. |
