| In different discourse situations,language displays different linguistic functions through the distribution of various lexical and syntactic items to achieve better communicative purposes.The co-occurrence pattern of lexical and syntactic items is an important manifestation of register variation.The study of register variation has become one of the hot topics in linguistic research at home and abroad.This study uses multidimensional analysis,founded by Biber in 1988,to study the variation of news registers.News registers are blended with official document registers,literature registers and comment registers,which promotes the variation of news registers and the emergence of new news categories.In order to grasp the characteristics and patterns of the variation of Chinese News registers,this study selects five common news registers as the research objects,such as news broadcast,news feature,news comment,news interview and reportage,according to the blending of news registers.Based on a selfbuilt corpus including 1100 news texts,this study uses the multi-dimensional approach to analyze 110 lexical and syntactic items to news registers.Through factor analysis,it is found that news registers have six dimensions of linguistic features which are dimension 1:"narrate concretely VS interpret abstractly",dimension 2:"critical presentation VS message delivery",dimension 3:"speculation&communication",dimension 4:"behavior orientation",dimension 5:"metrological modification" and dimension 6:"degree modification".This study further uses multivariate analysis of variance,post multiple comparison and other statistical methods to explore the linguistic differences between news registers in each dimension.Then this study analyzes the differences of linguistic features and dimensions of news registers according to the framework for situational analysis established by Biber and Conrad(2019).Meanwhile,this study extracts typical corpus fragments from the self-built corpus and makes an explanation and analysis of the variation of news registers from a qualitative perspective combined with the actual use of each dimension’s linguistic items,which enriches the study of news register variation and Chinese corpus linguistics,enriches the application of multi-dimensional analysis in Chinese language,and provides reference for the future research on Chinese register variation. |
