Objective:To explore the psychological status and influencing factors of medical staff in Wuhan city one and a half years after the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020;to investigate the effectiveness of group counseling intervention measures on the psychological status of medical staff,with the aim of providing suggestions for effective psychological interventions following public health emergencies.Methods:Study one assessed the psychological status of 600 frontline medical staff in Wuhan designated COVID-19 hospitals using questionnaires,including a basic information questionnaire,Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale,Patient Health Questionnaire,Insomnia Severity Index,and Impact of Event Scale-Revised.Study two selected 100 medical staff from study one,who voluntarily divided into experimental and control groups,with 50 people in each group.The experimental group received 16 hours of group counseling intervention,once a week for two months,while the control group received no intervention.Both groups were evaluated using the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and Positive and Negative Affect Schedule before and after the intervention to assess the intervention effect.Results:A total of 600 questionnaires were distributed,with 558 valid responses(93%)after excluding 42 invalid questionnaires.Among the 558 medical staff in Wuhan,172(30.8%)had symptoms of anxiety,279(50.0%)had symptoms of depression,191(34.2%)had symptoms of insomnia,and 19(10.1%)had symptoms of PTSD.The longer time in hospital during the epidemic,infection with neoconiosis,and use of sedative sleeping pills were factors influencing medical staff to have anxiety symptoms,the longer time in hospital during the epidemic,infection with neoconiosis,smoking,and use of sedative sleeping pills were factors influencing medical staff to have depressive symptoms,the longer time in hospital during the epidemic,and use of sedative sleeping pills were factors influencing medical staff to have insomnia symptoms,and infection with neoconiosis during the epidemic Pneumonia was an influencing factor for medical staff having PTSD symptoms.The total score,self-transformation,personal strength,life perception,new possibilities,and relationship with others scores of the post-traumatic growth scale in the experimental group after the group counseling intervention were significantly higher than those in the control group(P < 0.05),and the positive emotion scores were significantly higher than those in the control group(P < 0.05),and the negative emotion scores were significantly lower than those in the control group(P < 0.05).Conclusion:One and a half years after COVID-19,the frontline medical staff in Wuhan had different degrees of psychological problems,with the largest number of depression symptoms,followed by insomnia and anxiety symptoms,and the least number of people with PTSD symptoms.The longer the time in the hospital,the more COVID-19 infection,smoking,and using sedative sleeping pills,the higher the risk of psychological problems.Group counseling intervention can improve the level of posttraumatic growth and positive affect and reduce negative affect in frontline medical staff.
