Abstract/Summary:
Depression syndrome generally refers to the disease caused by stagnancy that cannot be diverged, which is due to emotional disorder and qi stagnation, resulting in subdued feeling, dark mood, chest tightness, irritability or easy to cry and other symptoms in the "Depression Syndrome" category of Chinese medicine.Ancient physicians believed that women’s body constitution was Yin and they are prone to qi stagnation, and innated with more worries and thoughts, which, combined with women’s rapid change of qi and blood during menstrual, gestational, postpartum and pre-postmenopausal periods,is susceptible to emotion,so that patients were dominated by women.By collecting and arranging ancient literature on female depression syndrome and focusing on the treatment of this disease, this paper systematically arranges and analyses the relevant contents using the literature research method and content analysis method, with a view to providing more prevention methods and treatment perspectives for modern clinics, which play an essential role in safeguarding the health of women. The main body of this paper is divided into five parts. In the first part, the historical evolution of the development of female depression syndrome as recorded in ancient literature is systematically analyzed and divided into four periods based on dynasties to clarify the historical lineage of the development of the disease and to lay the foundation for the study of the diagnosis and treatment of female depression in dialectical treatment of Chinese medicine. The second part analyses the causes of female depression based on temperament endowments, body constitution factors and physiological characteristics,as well as the social environment and women’s living conditions. In the third part,we systematically examine the contents of the Chinese medical literature on the pathogenesis of female depression syndrome, discussing the characteristics of the pathogenesis from two aspects:the viscera disharmony and the imbalance of qi,blood and body fluid. The fourth part classifies and organizes the treatment of female depression on syndrome differentiation of Chinese medicine from three aspects:the viscera,qi,blood and body fluid, and different physiological periods. It also provides a compilation of the traditional Chinese medicine treatment for this disease, which emphasizes the psychological perspective of relieving the patient’s emotional depression. The fifth part is based on the theory of " Preventive Treatment of Disease" in Chinese medicine, and explores the contents of ancient medical literature on prenatal, perinatal, postnatal and women’s regular emotional health and preventive care.As we can see from the literature, the scope of the ancient literature on female depression syndrome is not limited to common traditional conditions such as hysteria and globus hysteriocus.During the physiological cycles of menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum and perimenopause, women are more likely to suffer from depression syndrome, accompanied by corresponding gynecological symptoms. The pathogenesis of the disease is a combination of deficiency and reality, and the disease can be caused by the imbalance of viscera,qi,blood,Yin and Yang. The treatment of the excess syndromes is based on alleviating depression to regulate qi,while the treatment of the deficiency syndromes is based on invigorating. In particular,we should pay special attention to the mental state of women before and after pregnancy.Non-pharmacological therapy can achieve twice the result with half the effort, reflecting the characteristics of Chinese medicine of harmonizing body and mind.At the same time, combined with the physiological characteristics of women’s "blood for use",while relieving depression,we should pay attention to the changes of Yin blood in the body and nourish blood to relieve depression.Emotional care and avoiding mental stimulation are important measures to prevent depression syndrome. The study of the ancient literature on female depression is expected to provide a documentary guarantee for the modern study of this disease.
