Purpose:The purpose of this study was to explore the medium-term efficacy of simultaneous unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and total knee arthroplasty in the treatment of medial compartment osteoarthritis, and compare the outcomes between MP and PS groups in total knee arthroplasty. Methods:Patients with bilateral medial compartment osteoarthritis who underwent simultaneous unicompartmental knee replacement and total knee arthroplasty from January 2013 to July 2015 at the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University were identified as the study participants. They were screened according to inclusion and exclusion criteria and divided into UKA group and TKA group according to surgical types. The TKA group was further divided into MP group and PS group.Baseline information was collected including patient age, gender, body mass index, preoperative ROM and WOMAC score.Follow-up data including ROM,WOMAC scores, patient satisfaction and complications were collected by the collaborators.Statistical analysis was performed through IBM SPSS Statistics 22.0 software, with P<0.05 being taken as a significant difference.Results:30 patients were eventually included with 4 males and 26 females.Among them,14 cases in the MP group and 16 cases in the PS group were included. The baseline data were balanced and all indicators including gender, age, body mass index, preoperative ROM and preoperative WOMAC scores were not significantly different(P>0.05).At the last follow-up,the WOMAC score and satisfaction in the UKA group was superior to those in the TKA group, with statistically significant difference(P<0.05).The ROM at the last follow-up was no statistically significant difference between two groups(P>0.05).There was no significant difference in ROM,WOMAC score and patient satisfaction degree between the PS and MP groups in the last follow-up(P>0.05).The mean follow-up for all cases was 73.61 months, with two cases of postoperative complications in UKA group and one case of postoperative complications in TKA group. Conclusion:Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty is a better option for medial unicompartmental osteoarthritis than total knee replacement in terms of clinical scores and satisfaction. There is no difference in the medium-term outcome between PS and MP prosthesis for patients following total knee replacement.
