This research was inspired by a study of the book Transparency by Colin Rowe and Robert Slutsky. The first edition of "Transparency" was published in 1964.Based on the Gestalt psychological theory, its discussion of architecture-related theories attempted to distinguish two forms of transparency, namely "phenomenal" transparency and "physical(or literal)" transparency, through the introduction of cubist painting.Furthermore,it puts this attribute in the study of architecture as the object, and interprets what specific formal means architectural cases use to express the polysemous space by analogy with architectural cases and cubist paintings’ commonness in visual and spatial expression. The author believes that the core discussion of the phenomenal transparency theory of architecture is that the spatial stratification structure derived by Colin Rowe and Slutsky is a mechanism for the organization and construction of space, concrete type and clear expression. On this basis,Hoisley proposes a new view in his "Transparent Formal Organization as a Means of Design" for Transparency: "Transparency,as a state of relations among formal-organizational elements, can also be seen and used as a means of formal organization." In "Transparency",the author condensed the formal organization means and four types of transparency and four spatial characteristics of transparency. The former is summarized from various architectural cases in Transparency, which can be used to compare with existing buildings to analyze whether they adopt similar spatial and formal paradigms. The latter is summarized from the discussion summary of Transparency, which can be used as evidence of the phenomenal transparency of architecture.A comparative study of Wang Shu’s text and Transparency reveals the similarities between them at the theoretical level:(1)their attitudes towards the form and function of architecture;(2)Examine architecture through the art of painting and(3)discuss architecture and natural objects.Such theoretical similarities lay the feasibility foundation of this study. The reasonableness of taking Xiangshan Campus as the analysis object of transparency theory in this paper is that Transparency and Wang Shu’s design concept both show an isomorphic thinking. The isomorphic thinking embodied in Transparency comes from its cubist painting origin, which proves that the urban context, natural objects and artificial objects system can interact with each other. The isomorphism thinking of Xiangshan campus design is mainly reflected in several aspects:(1)isomorphism of natural objects and artificial objects(2)isomorphism of natural shapes and geometric shapes(3)isomorphism of architectural facades and planes(4)isomorphism of calligraphy structure and architectural planes. The research of this paper is mainly divided into the following three steps:(1)to confirm the theoretical feasibility of the research and the rationality of the case.(2)Summarize the four types of organizational means of transparency and establish its prototype.(3)Summarize the four spatial characteristics of transparency and illustrate them through classical architectural cases.(4)Use "means" in the architectural analysis of Xiangshan Campus.(5)Apply "feature" to the architectural analysis of Xiangshan Campus, focusing on the analysis of situations that do not conform to "means" but conform to "feature".(6)Through the analysis of Xiangshan Campus with transparency,it provides a new perspective on how to use the formal organization means of transparency as an analysis and design tool for architectural design in the context of local architecture.
