China’s 14 th Five-Year Plan proposes to build a safe, continuous and unobstructed slow traffic system. There are some drawbacks in the development mode of motor traffic in the historic area of Guilin, and the demand for slow traffic and its optimization potential are greater. For those reasons, this paper uses spatial syntax theory, combined with research methods such as ancient literature review, extensive offline field surveys,real-time traffic data statistics, thermal analysis, and online questionnaire survey data analysis,to study the necessity and feasibility of building a slow traffic system in the historical urban area of Guilin.Further analysis is conducted on the impact of existing road network characteristics on the implementation of slow traffic, and optimization strategies are proposed with a focus on the road network. The main research content includes:(1)After consulting a large amount of literature and understanding the origin of the historical urban construction pattern in Guilin City,it was found that the regional roads were built along mountains and rivers, fully respecting the original city structure and landscape topography, which had an impact on the subsequent road network. An analysis was conducted on the road network plane structure, construction situation, and traffic operation status of the historic area of Guilin City.It was found that there were obvious drawbacks in the early planning and construction of roads, with insufficient space reserved for future development.Currently, the road service capacity is insufficient and road congestion is severe. However, the current road network structure has good basic conditions for the development of slow traffic. Finally, the adverse effects of the existing road network in the historic area on transportation were summarized. The transportation mode dominated by motor vehicles has brought serious congestion to the historic area of Guilin, which is not conducive to the development of the tourism economy and brings opportunities for building a slow moving transportation system.(2)From the analysis of population heat distribution,it can be seen that the higher the heat is,the higher the concentration of people in the region is,which indicates that the tourism demand in the historical city is strong, and attention should be paid to the construction of reachability of surrounding roads and slow traffic. The analysis of bus and shared bus station coverage shows that the uneven distribution characteristics of stations actually make it difficult for the floating population on the southeast side of the historic area to clear out.Based on spatial syntax research,it has been found that areas with high population heat typically have higher "walking parameters",indicating better walking conditions, which is highly consistent with the results of field investigations. The online and offline surveys on travel willingness also demonstrate the willingness of local citizens and tourists to fully deploy slow traffic. From a technical perspective,it has been demonstrated that the historic area of Guilin has the conditions to create a regional slow traffic system.(3)Specific optimization strategies have been proposed for the road network of the slow traffic system in the historic area of Guilin City.Firstly,a "detour" diversion strategy is proposed for inbound traffic in Guilin urban area, utilizing the ring expressway and various levels of ring roads to carry out three-level diversion around the periphery of the historical urban area, weakening the impact of north-south transit traffic on the internal traffic of the historical urban area.Secondly, optimize the road network of motor traffic within the historical urban area, plan a secondary skeleton road network for motor vehicles, strictly restrict motor traffic routes, and ensure good diversion between motor traffic flow and slow traffic flow;Grading and classifying slow traffic, clarifying the right of way for each road, and reasonably planning the cycling and pedestrian road network based on the needs of tourism and daily transportation. Finally, relevant suggestions are put forward for the organization and service capacity of slow traffic, including tilting motor right-of-way,optimizing the public transportation system, improving non-motorized parking areas, and slow traffic transfer.
