Due to the continuous expansion of the city, the original central city is not enough to take on so much population and new functions, and the old city is gradually falling into decay. With the introduction of cultural confidence, many people are eager to "explore their roots" and come up with cultural cards with history and characteristics. Therefore, city planners have begun to try to take the traditional cultural lineage as the base, and to carry out "ancient city reconstruction" planning and design for the old city, which is rich in history and in need of renewal,so as to complete the transformation of the central city from "ancient city" to "new city" to ancient city."old city" to "new city" and then to old city again. However, how to redevelop the old city has caused great controversy in society and academia, and the stereotypical replication of successful old cities has led to some old cities with ungrounded content that cannot attract tourists, broken capital chains that lead to the failure of the old city, and negative resistance of the indigenous people to the redevelopment of the old city, etc. How to scientifically and effectively redevelop the old city has become a problem that needs to be solved. This paper presents the concept of "ancient city succession" based on the redevelopment of old cities, analyzes the real dilemma of ancient city succession, and summarizes the ancient city succession model from both macro and micro perspectives through the study of three ancient cities in Henan,Kaifeng,Luoyang, and Xuchang, and finally proposes an enhancement strategy for the key issues in ancient city succession, which is of practical significance for subsequent old city redevelopment through the redevelopment of old cities, and helps to plan and enhance the subsequent ancient city practice. The article is divided into six sections for the study:The first part is the introductory section. This section describes the background of ancient city redevelopment, related theoretical concepts and related research at home and abroad, proposes the concept of "ancient city succession" based on old city renovation, and outlines the practice model of old city renewal and ancient city redevelopment on the original site of the old city. The second part analyzes the causes and dilemmas of the ancient city succession problem, presents the main points of conflict between stakeholders in the ancient city succession practice, and then translates their group needs into the physical construction of the ancient city to facilitate subsequent research. The third part compares the cases of ancient city redevelopment practices in Henan Province, and selects three representative ancient cities in Kaifeng,Luoyang, and Xuchang, examining their redevelopment background and history, and analyzing the geographical location, the state of historical remains, and the urban form of the three ancient cities before redevelopment.Part IV and Part V analyze the practice of the three ancient cities from macro and micro models respectively. At the macro level, the cultural core should respect the history of the city, grasp the key points to expand the connotation, the urban space form should protect the urban skeleton, and change the part to improve the quality of the ancient city;at the micro level, six practice patterns of urban construction are summarized:(1)the construction of road network system should reasonably organize the internal and external traffic connection of the ancient city, the internal traffic of the ancient city should combine local characteristics, and create a pleasant pedestrian system.(2)The construction of public spaces should include a variety of functions, preservation of traditional public spaces, and shaping of core node spaces.(3)Architectural style control and design should be graded, traditional buildings should be protected, and traditional elements should be extracted from new buildings.(4)Greening system planning should build a multi-dimensional greening landscape system, focusing on greening landscape with traditional ecological elements of the ancient city.(5)Population scale control and methods should control the appropriate population scale,to ensure the quality of life of residents, the existing residential building style and functional transformation.(6)Commercial planning can choose to revive the traditional commercial pedestrian street, while local commerce and investment development. The sixth part returns to the needs of stakeholders and proposes a strategic planning strategy based on the government’s position,a cultural preservation and inheritance strategy based on the position of experts and scholars,a business enhancement strategy based on the position of businessmen,a habitat enhancement strategy based on the position of residents, and a tourism value enhancement strategy based on the position of tourists for the parts of the ancient city that are not covered.By studying the practical models of three ancient cities in Henan Province, the study summarizes more systematically the evolutionary model of ancient cities suitable for the Chinese context, expecting to inspire old city renewal projects based on the construction of ancient cities and to provide thoughts for the redevelopment of different types of ancient cities.
