Abstract/Summary:
The reform and opening up of China has led to rapid economic development and urbanisation. The new round of urban development has found its way into the Central Government’s 14 th Five-Year Plan, which series of national policies and regulations have been enacted to protect historic and cultural areas, but many problems still exist in the regeneration of historic and cultural areas.Striking a balance between preserving historic and cultural districts while meeting the increasing demands of the people and achieving sustainable development of the districts is an urban regeneration issue that deserves in-depth study. This study is based on a literature study of the current status of research on historical and cultural districts at home and abroad, combined with domestic and international case studies of organic regeneration, and selected the Mengcheng North Street historical and cultural district for field research. This research includes the following aspects: i.Explaining the concepts and basic theories related to historical and cultural districts, and analysing the advantages of organic regeneration theory in the design of renewal and renovation of historical and cultural districts, and using it as a guiding theory in the subsequent design of renovation.Combining domestic and international renovation cases, and analysing typical cases to gain experience and inspiration from them.Second, through field research, the traditional landscape structure and characteristics of Mengcheng North Street are analysed. The article elaborates on five aspects, namely traditional culture empowerment. This paper takes the historic and cultural district of Mengcheng North Street as the object of practice, and designs the transformation of the district in four dimensions, including spatial renewal, architectural renewal, transport renewal and cultural renewal, according to the function of the land, landscape environment, road traffic and existing buildings. In the spatial regeneration, public and private spaces are transformed to improve the living environment of the neighbourhood;in the architectural regeneration, the height of the houses in the neighbourhood is unified and the traditional architectural pattern is restored to restore the original appearance of the neighbourhood;in the traffic regeneration, the traffic order is enhanced and the roads in the neighbourhood are protected through the separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic and the parallel mode of water and land;in the cultural regeneration, cultural symbols are extracted and the spatial atmosphere is created to
