| Urban vitality is a crucial indicator for assessing a city’s health, prosperity, and capacity for sustainable development, reflecting the city’s levels of prosperity, activity, and diversity. As a core aspect of urban development, urban land use planning exerts a significant influence on urban vitality. In the context of optimizing existing resources, studying urban land use planning is of paramount importance.Nonetheless, there is a current deficiency in research regarding the relationship between urban vitality and land use planning, with few investigations delving into the links between urban land utilization and urban vitality, particularly within specific urban contexts through empirical research. This study aims to explore in depth the connection between urban vitality and land use planning in order to offer valuable insights for urban planning and land use policy formulation. The research attempts to address the following questions:(1)How can the optimal scale for urban vitality research be determined?(2)What are the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of urban vitality?(3)What type of association exists between urban vitality and land use?(4)How can land use planning strategies be informed by urban revitalization for different types of urban units? In pursuit of these objectives, this study employs Chengdu as a case study and establishes a hexagonal grid system comprising 20 scales to analyze the scale effects of urban vitality and identify the optimal scale for research.Subsequently, the spatiotemporal patterns of urban vitality are investigated through spatial analysis and time-series analysis methodologies.Additionally, the Kriging interpolation method and contour interpretation technique are utilized to further discern the distribution of urban vitality centers and examine the spatial structure of Chengdu’s central urban area. The land use index system is then constructed on three levels: land use structure indicators, land use mix indicators, and land use derivative indicators. The relationship between land use and urban vitality is analyzed using a multi-scale geographically weighted regression model, revealing the impact of various land use indicators on urban vitality and their spatial heterogeneity. Finally, the K-means clustering algorithm is employed to categorize urban units based on land use structure types and identify the predominant urban functions of each type, thus providing land use planning strategy references for different types of urban units. The research findings indicate:(1)Urban vitality exhibits a pronounced scale effect, with 1000 m identified as the optimal research scale.(2)The spatial distribution of urban vitality in Chengdu’s central urban area is characterized by higher levels in the center and southern regions, while lower levels are observed in the eastern, western, and northern directions.Vitality is primarily concentrated in the downtown Chunxi Road area and the southern Financial City area, exhibiting a distinct "core-periphery" pattern.Urban vitality also demonstrates significant clustering distribution characteristics, with high urban vitality agglomerations mainly distributed in the city center and areas extending southward along the central axis of Tianfu Avenue. In terms of temporal distribution characteristics, urban vitality during weekdays presents a left-skewed pattern at all five time points. At 8 am on weekdays, vitality is significantly lower than at other times, while at 8 pm,urban vitality is notably higher than at other times. The temporal distribution characteristics of urban vitality during weekends are similar to those during weekdays, but the average vitality levels at each time point on weekends are relatively lower compared to weekdays.Based on the spatial distribution characteristics of urban vitality, the spatial structure of Chengdu’s central urban area can be identified as comprising one primary center, nine secondary centers, and eleven tertiary centers, with two distinct axes – one main and one auxiliary.(3)The proportions of various land use types have a significant impact on urban vitality, and this impact exhibits spatial heterogeneity. The total number of land use types, land use disorder, and land use equilibrium generally show positive correlations, negative correlations, and positive correlations with urban vitality, respectively, indicating that land use diversity, spatial structure complexity, and distribution equilibrium have crucial effects on urban vitality.Road network density and development intensity generally exert significant positive influences on urban vitality, while building density negatively affects urban vitality.(4)Chengdu’s central urban area can be divided into five urban unit types: residential,mixed-use,ecological,commercial,and industrial units. For residential units, land use planning strategies should prioritize increasing the proportion of residential land, optimizing green space layout, reducing land use disorder, enhancing road network density, decreasing building density, and improving development intensity. For mixeduse units, land use planning strategies should focus on adding multifunctional land, increasing the proportion of public facilities, optimizing the layout of commercial and business land, and strengthening the planning of green spaces and plazas. In commercial units, land use planning strategies should emphasize moderately increasing residential, healthcare, and medical land, strengthening business land, optimizing road and building density, and reasonably adjusting development intensity. This study uncovers the relationship between urban vitality and land use planning through empirical research, proposing urban revitalization-oriented land use planning strategies for different types of urban units in order to provide a more scientific and rational reference for practical land use planning work and policy formulation. |
